Entrepreneur and philanthropist Kumar Muthalagappan OBE has established a charitable foundation that aims to aid underprivileged communities with healthcare and education initiatives and community projects to give people more opportunities and help enrich their lives.
Kumar has had an illustrious career which has seen him head up several successful businesses in finance, property, hospitality, principally clinical research and more recently private equity.
The Entrepreneurial Journey towards an OBE Award and a Charitable Foundation
A former Chairman of MeDiNova, a clinical research company responsible for delivering trials into wide-ranging conditions such as asthma and osteoporosis, Kumar instilled a practice to ensure trials were available to all – an ethos about which he was passionate.
When he more recently took the helm of Oncacare, a global network of oncology clinical research sites providing efficient clinical trials, which were easily undertaken with increased availability to participants and sponsors.
Kumar has also spent years willingly devoting his expertise and knowledge for the benefit of others – which led him to be awarded an OBE for his services to hospitality in 2009, having served on the boards of Visit Britain, Advantage West Midlands and the Heart of England Tourist Board.
Other appointments, both past and present, also include: the Olympic Games Delivery Authority, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Alexandra Palace, the council of the University of Warwick, and Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre.
The KM Foundation is Born
Founded alongside Kumar’s children Seetha, Deva and Dharma, the KM Foundation was established to improve lives in the key areas of education, communities and healthcare.
In each of these areas, the Foundation has appointed a strategic leader and allocated resources and is collaborating with partner organisations to develop a clear plan that aligns with the recipient’s capabilities and needs.
In its efforts to help people progress in life, as well as improve healthcare for all, the KM Foundation has first pledged to assist underprivileged communities to participate in initiatives that will improve their situation. It will include opportunities for arts and music among low-income families and communities.
One such example is the Foundation’s partnership with global eye care charity Orbis UK to set up a series of Novel Eye Camps, allowing ophthalmologists to work in the field to identify those in need of a referral and/or surgery. It is anticipated that over the next three years, 100,000 people will be screened, with 34,500 expected to require surgery.
Furthermore, passionate about ensuring basic health provision, the KM Foundation is supporting the London Murugan Temple to undertake many activities to improve healthcare through better education throughout East London.
Founder of the KM Foundation, Kumar Muthalagappan OBE, commented:

“The KM Foundation is an initiative which is set to not only progress lives in a meaningful way, but also leave a long-term, impactful legacy.
“We hope to achieve this by assisting disadvantaged communities to progress their lives through greater access to education, by aiding social cohesion and economic progression within deprived areas and by contributing to high-impact health initiatives and research.
“Through assisting in these three areas, our goal is to deliver a positive influence on a wide range of communities as well as future generations, in the hope that they eventually give back to their communities.
“We are very much looking forward to furthering the potential of individuals and communities and to having a positive and lasting influence on their futures for the years and decades to come.”
